Bridging The Gap Between Camping, Glamping & Villa Holidays

Holiday Resorts

Quinta do Paraiso apartments, located in the Quinta do Paraiso resort. Onsite facilities such as the large communal pool are all within a stone’s throw of the apartments. Click Here To Get More Details

Do you sometimes look for a bit more comfort than a camping holiday but still want the camaraderie of a camping holiday park? Especially in those days of early spring and late autumn where the greater chance of it being colder and or wetter can be a bit of a turn off. That’s where Holiday Resorts could come in.

Self-catering with a community feel that gives the extra privacy and peace of a villa holiday can be combined with access to a large, shared swimming pool, other leisure facilities and proximity to restaurants so that the whole family can both relax and be entertained.

Besides a choice of villas within a holiday resort, the options to choose also includes town houses and apartments. That way you can combine a mixture of lounging in the sun with fun-filled activities on your doorstep in much the same way you might already enjoy in a good quality camping holiday park.

Kids’ clubs, communal pools and on-site beaches can be great places for the children to make friends, whilst parents can either join in the fun themselves, or enjoy timeout on the golf course or spa.

James Villas have a range of destinations worth checking out which are available throughout the year, including Greece, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, Provence and other locations further afield such as Florida.

Camping In The Loire Valley

A Few Recommendations For Camping In The Loire Valley

Camping In The Loire Valley

Camping In The Loire Valley puts you in a land of lush, rolling hills, grand Châteaux and lovely river & lakeside beaches.

Rightly famed for it’s legendary chateaux, fine wines, spectacular scenery, historic towns and cities, the Loire Valley makes for an excellent location for a family camping holiday. Naturally there’s plenty of choice when it comes to camping in the Loire Valley.

Here are my reviews of a small sample of my favourite locations for camping in the Loire Valley. The list is not meant to be exhaustive, so if you have a particular favourite or otherwise that you wish to mention, why don’t you do so in the comments section at the end of the article.

Yelloh! Village Parc de Montsabert, Coutures

Camping In The Loire Valley

If you book a stay at Yelloh! Village Parc de Montsabert for at least 3 nights directly through Brittany Ferries you’ll qualify for a discount on your ferry crossing too. Click Here For More Details

Village Parc de Montsabert, Coutures is a Yelloh site in a rural location, south-east of Angers, the bustling capital city of Anjou and close to the historic Château de Montsabert, which dates back to the fourteenth century. There are 65 holiday units available to rent, largely consisting of mobile homes but also some cottages and a gypsy caravan. There are also 89 touring pitches. On the park there are plenty of activities and amenities available to use including a heated swimming pool which can be covered if required, waterslides, a tennis court, mini-golf, a games room, playing fields and playgrounds.

As well as booking through Yelloh, who are one of the top French camping holiday operators, you can also book directly through Brittany Ferries. If you do that and stay at least 3 nights you qualify for a discount on your ferry crossing, regardless of how many other nights you choose to stay elsewhere. As well as being a great destination in it’s own right, it is also an ideal destination for breaking journeys travelling further south or when returning to the Channel ports

Le Domaine de la Brèche

Camping In The Loire Valley

An avant holiday home, one of the range of accommodation options at Le Domaine de la Brèche. Click Here For More Details

Set in the grounds of an old manor house, Le Domaine de la Brèche is a 5 Star rated camping park very close to the river bank of the Loire itself. It has a reputation for very high standards. There is a fantastic swimming pool complex here with four pools and as many water slides. It also has two tennis courts, a volleyball net, a sports field, a pitch and putt golf course and a pond for fishing which connects to the Loire and around which the campsite was first constructed over 50 years ago. There is also a minimarket for shopping, a bar and a restaurant which has a terrace area.

Acres of space and woodland around the campsite are ideal for exploring either on foot or by cycling.

There are several different types of accommodation which can be booked here, including upmarket mobile homes such as the Aspect featured above, more basic but still comfortable mobile homes and safari tents. Although very spacious, even when full it will still feel like there is plenty of space here, the campsite has just 235 pitches so early booking is recommended, particularly in high season.

Camping Parc de Fierbois

Camping In The Loire Valley

The bar terrace at Camping Parc de Fierbois, one of the most popular locations for camping in the Loire Valley.

Camping Parc de Fierbois has long been a favourite for family camping in the Loire Valley, especially those with young children. It is a 5 Star campsite in the Les Castels group of camping parks and is about 25 miles south of Tours. With 394 pitches it is one of the larger campsites in the Loire but still not massively large.

Located about 25 miles south of Tours, near the village of Sainte-Catherine-de-Fierbois, it is an ideal base for exploring the more central part of the Loire including Tours itself, the medieval castle at Chinon, the Renaissance Chateaux of Amboise and Azay-le-Rideau or for a longer day out, the well known theme park of Futuroscope is less than an hour’s drive further south.

Facilities on the camping park include an indoor and an outdoor pool and a paddling pool for toddlers. The outdoor pool is a large lagoon with multiple rock features and five waterslides. There are two tennis courts, four table tennis tables, a football pitch, a volleyball net, a basketball court and a badminton court.

There is a campsite supermarket for shopping, a restaurant, a pizzeria, a takeaway and a bar. During July and August there is live entertainment too. Camping Parc de Fierbois has a reputation for being one of the noisier or lively campsites, depending on your point of view. If you like having plenty to do and a fun packed holiday then this is probably the place for you. If you prefer it quieter then a more out-of-season visit will suit you better if you’d still like to come here.

La Mignardiere, Ballan Mire

Camping In The Loire Valley

La Mignardiere, to the south-west of Tours, is a convenient location for exploring this part of the Loire Valley. Many of the Loire’s greatest chateaux are no more than an hour’s drive from this 4 Star campsite. Click Here For More Details

La Mignardiere, near the village of Ballan Mire to the south-west of Tours, is ideally situated for exploring the Loire Valley. There are pitches both with or without water and electricity depending on what you wish to pay for, as well as mobile homes and chalets that can be rented from the holiday camp’s owners. There is an extensive covering of trees to provide shade for most of the pitches.

Leisure facilities here include heated swimming pools, one of which can be covered, a paddling pool, tennis, table tennis, a large playground area and a takeaway food option if you do not wish to cook for yourself. There is also a discount on the use of a leisure park opposite the campsite.

Camping Les Nobis D’Anjou, Montreuil-Bellay

Camping In The Loire Valley

The restaurant terrace at Camping Les Nobis D’Anjou. Click Here For More Details About This Location

Camping Les Nobis d’Anjou is a friendly 4 Star campsite on the banks of the Thouet river at the foot of the castle of Montreuil-Bellay, near Saumur. You can stay here by renting a mobile home or bungalow tent or by staying in your own tent, caravan, trailer tent or campervan.

This is an ideal location for exploring the western part of the Loire. Facilities here include a very passable, outdoor, heated swimming pool. As well as it’s own highly regarded restaurant and bar, the campsite is very close to some fine restaurants in Montreuil-Bellay itself, if you don’t mind climbing the steps up the ramparts into the town.

Nearby locations worth visiting include Fontrevraud Abbey, the ancestral home of the Plantagenet Kings of England, Saumur, a scenic town with it’s own castle overlooking the Loire and medieval streets, and the Chateau de Montsoreau, the setting of the Alexandre Dumas novel, La Dame de Monsoreau.

You will usually have to book static accommodation here in advance but it would be unusual for there to be no room for tourers passing through who wish to stay here.

Camping In Normandy

There Are So Many Reasons For Camping In Normandy

Camping In Normandy will often be the first port of call for campers seeking their first camping expedition across the Channel or more seasoned campers wanting their first stopover before the long journey further south. It’s also a destination well worthy of a holiday in it’s own right.

Perhaps the weather will usually not be dissimilar to that in southern England but apart from that it will offer an authentic French experience for you to sample whether continental camping is for you or not, with plenty of attractions in it’s own right. You’ll also have the great bonus of knowing your destination is just a short drive away, particularly if you’ve opted for one of the Normandy ferry ports such as Ouistreham (sometimes referred to as Caen, the nearest city to the port), Dieppe or Cherbourg. So when the children pipe up with that familiar refrain of “Are we nearly there yet?”, you can genuinely reply “yes” and no sooner have you uttered it your holiday destination will come into view.

Camping In Normandy

For a taste of history, Normandy is the location of the 1944 D Day landings, the legendary Bayeux Tapestry depicting the Norman invasion of England in 1066, William the Conqueror’s dramatic castle at Falaise and of course, the legendary Abbey of Mont-St-Michel, rising out of the sea on a rocky promontory and one of the top tourist attractions in the whole of France, are just a handful of my personal recommendations.

Better still, if beaches are your family’s favourite theme then mile upon mile of sandy beaches will await you, not to mention lovely, picturesque coastal towns such as Fecamp, Honfleur, Deauville, the dramatic clifftop views at Etretat and further inland, lovely historic cities such as Coutances and Sees. You’ll soon discover there is far too much to see to pack into one trip.

Enough of the reasons for going, here are a handful of suggestions for the best of Camping In Normandy.

1) Camping Château Lez-Eaux

Camping In Normandy

Château Lez Eaux is located in a lovely traditional chateau setting. Click Here For More Information From Eurocamp

A convenient destination to choose if you’ve arrived in France via Cherbourg, Caen or Saint Malo, Chateau de Lez Eaux holds fond memories for me as the first destination chosen for a family touring holiday in the family trailer tent some years ago. As well as pitches with and without electric hook ups for tourers, there are also a selection of mobile home categories, treehouses and pre-erected tents that you can book through leading camping operators such as Eurocamp: or French operator Les Castels who give it a 5 star classification.

You can also turn up with your own tent or camper as we did, but you do run the risk of the site being full during peak periods. The site can be contacted directly via Château de Lez Eaux

Amenities on the site include an outdoor and an indoor pool, always handy in view of the unpredictable weather at times, a large playing field, a tennis court, table tennis tables, play areas, a bar, a takeaway food outlet, a grocery, a fishing lake and other essential camping facilities such as washing, cleaning and sanitation units.

For more information, please contact Eurocamp

2) La Côte de Nacre, St Aubin-sur-Mer

Camping In Normandy

La Côte de Nacre, St Aubin-sur-Mer, is a very popular camping park on the Normandy coast, just a short drive from the Channel port of Ouistreham.

La Côte de Nacre is just yards from the D-Day landing beaches. It also has it’s own fantastic pool complex (see above) which includes waterslides and a retractable roof for the main swimming pool in the event of bad weather. It’s less than 20 minutes drive from the Channel port of Ouistreham so again it is only a short journey once your ferry crossing has been completed. Other facilities include a bar, a grocery shop and a restaurant in part of the bar. There are four table tennis courts, a playground and a small football pitch, a basketball court and pitches for boules.

For more information about La Côte de Nacre, please contact either Eurocamp or Al Fresco Holidays

3) Campsite La Vallee, Houlgate

Camping In Normandy

Safari tents at Campsite La Vallee in Houlgate. Click Here For More Details From Eurocamp

Long one of the most popular spots for camping in Normandy, Campsite La Vallee is perfectly located for a choice of broad sandy beaches, fascinating history and chic seaside towns. With a toddler pool, a children’s pool and two family pools, this is a camping park to cater for all ages. Add to this four waterslides and you have a waterpark which is built for fun and action. This includes the covered pool which provides an all weather option when needed.

Other facilities include a bar, a restaurant located within the bar, a grocery shop, entertainment options including evening shows, a takeaway, a tennis court, a football pitch, a volleyball court, 3 boules pitches, cycling, pony rides and much more.

Accommodation options here include a range of various mobile homes, safari tents and pitches for tourers.

For more information about this highly regarded location please contact either Eurocamp or Al Fresco Holidays

4) Camping Municipal Du Vieux Chateau, Saint Sauveur Le Vicomte

Camping In Normandy

Camping Municipal Du Vieux Chateau, as the name suggests, is a municipal campsite adjacent to a river and the medieval chateau which overlooks the main road through this small town about 20 miles from Cherbourg. There’s not much here if you’re travelling with a young family but I’ve often found it a convenient spot to camp not far from Cherbourg. The chateau is an interesting building in it’s own right, the campsite has a playground and it is conveniently located for a meal and a drink in the restaurant across the road and another one not too far away which both seem to be highly regarded by visitors and locals alike.

5) Camping de Sainte Mere Eglise

Camping In Normandy

Another very popular small campsite in the small town of the same name, famous for being the first town liberated by US paratroopers on D-Day. It can be found on the N19 road which runs down the eastern side of the Cherbourg Peninsula. The campsite has laundry and sanitary facilities, is across the road from a well known D-Day museum and a playground. There are also sports facilities nearby in the town. There are mobile homes that can be booked as well as pitches for tents, caravans, campervans and trailer tents. There is a site website with more information:

This is my own selection of recommendations for Camping In Normandy, if you have one of your own that you wish to mention please tell everyone by making use of the comments box below.

Camping In Brantome

Camping In Brantome & The Perigord Vert

Camping In Brantome and the Perigord Vert puts you within easy reach of some of the most beautiful villages and small towns in the whole of France. This includes Aubeterre-sur-Dronne, Saint-Jean-de-Cole and Limeuil, all listed as a holder of the “most beautiful villages in France” award, Bourdeilles and it’s magnificent chateau and of course, Brantome itself, often described with only slight exaggeration as the “Venice of the Dordogne”. It is a very pretty town with a mix of medieval and renaissance architecture to admire in a lovely riverside setting on the Dronne, a tributary of the River Isle.

Here is a list of some potential good options for Camping In Brantome and the surrounding parts of the Perigord Vert.

Camping Brantome Peyrelevade is about a 20 minute walk from the bars and restaurants along the Dronne In the centre of Brantome. The campsite itself is in wooded parkland in an attractive setting backing on to the Dronne itself, adding to it’s charm. There is a heated swimming pool next to the bar and restaurant area. The Wifi is said to be available throughout the campsite. The pitches were reasonably spread out, many of them having shade.

As well as pitches for your own tent, caravan, camper or motorhome, there are also a small number of pre-erected tents that can be rented as well as mobile homes. There are two toilet blocks for campers. Reserving in advance is recommended in high season. More details can be obtained direct from the campsite via

Having had the pleasure of camping at Chateau Le Verdoyer on a family holiday some years ago, this camping park ranks amongst the very best I have stayed at. It has many facilities and is well run by it’s Dutch owners who are multi-lingual. A new heated, indoor swimming pool has recently been added to those facilities. There are pitches for tents, trailer tents, caravans and motor homes in a large field with well defined pitches. There are also pre-erected tents, mobile homes and caravans which can be hired on site and even five different rooms in the chateau itself.

The chateau is the location for the campsite’s restaurant if you fancy a change from making your own barbeques.

4) Belair Le Camping

Belair Le Camping, Maucité

Camping In Brantome

Abbaye Saint-Pierre, Brantome (from my own photo collection)

There are other options for Camping In Brantome and the Perigord Vert such as Camping Puynadal which is further out from Brantome than Camping Peyrelevarde, featured above, and a bit smaller and cheaper. If there are any other campsites in this part of France you’d like to tell us about, hopefully good but bad too if you want to, then please feel free to make use of the Facebook comments box below. It will be great to hear from you.

Practical Information

There are three main ways to get to the Costa Brava and Costa Dorada. Firstly by air to nearby airports such as Gerona, Barcelona or Reus which can be booked either with or separately from your holiday operator. Secondly, you could use the ferry route to Bilbao and then head across by road, depending on the traffic this could easily still involve a five hour drive. Thirdly you could head down from the Channel coast if you’ve got the time. If you are having a 2 or 3 week holiday or longer, that can be done without being too onerous with other stops as part of your holiday, either by adding extra campsites to stay at or one or two hotel stops. Indeed that is an excellent way to get further afield at your own pace as I myself have done on several trips as far as Spain, Italy and even Portugal.
