Camping In The Lake District

With one of the UK’s most glorious landscapes, the spectacular lakes and hills of the Lake District has some amazing camping locations for enjoying camping in the Lake District.

We’re taking a look at those available through the National Trust, Haven Holidays and Sykes Cottages, plus a few independent campsites bought to our attention by our readers and followers.

A word of warning before we start. Although the Lake District has some spectacular and dramatic scenery, always take care to check a local weather forecast before venturing out, as weather conditions can deteriorate very quickly.

Great Langdale Campsite

Great Langdale Campsite has a wide selection of grassy pitches as well as some wooden camping pods if you are looking for something more sturdy than a tent. There are two toilet and shower blocks here, plus washing-up areas and a laundry and drying room, as well as a bouldering wall and a children’s play area.

A dramatic spot to camp at if you love the outdoor life, you’ll probably be pleased to know that the Sticklebarn pub is just a ten minute walk from the campsite.

Low Wray Campsite

Low Wray Campsite has a wide range of camping choices including traditional pitches with waterfront, lake, meadow or woodland views plus pre-erected camping pods and safari tents and spaces for campervans and motorhomes. In all there are 153 pitches here.

There is a shop, three toilet and shower blocks, laundry facilities, washing-up areas and a children’s adventure playground. Canoes, rowing boats, sit-on kayaks and paddleboards are also available to hire as well as mountain bikes. In high season, wood-fired pizzas are available on certain nights.

Wasdale Campsite

Wasdale Campsite has 120 pitches and lies at the foot of England’s largest mountain, Scafell. You can also enjoy views of Wastwater, England’s deepest lake. As well as the option of camping in your own tent, there are also pre-erected bell tents, seven heated wooden camping pods and eleven hard standing campervan and motorhome pitches, complete with electric hook-ups.

There is an on-site shop, a toilet and shower block, washing-up areas, a laundry room and electric hook-ups for tents.

Hoathwaite Campsite

Hoathwaite Campsite is in a stunning location overlooking Coniston Water, one of the Lake District’s largest lakes. It’s a simple site with no frills, just some basic amenities including a toilet and shower block, washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal point. Other than that, it’s almost “wild camping” with space for tents, campervans and motorhomes.

If you want a step up from that, basecamp tipis and yurts have also been erected here.

Lakelands Holiday Park

Haven Holidays have one camping park in the Lake District, Lakeland Holiday Park, which is close to Grange-over-Sands, overlooking Morecambe Bay and less than ten miles to the southern tip of Lake Windermere.

As well as the usual top class facilities and amenities you’d expect to see at a Haven Holiday Park such as indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a bar, restaurant and evening entertainment, you can enjoy a variety of water sports on the holiday park’s own lake, including kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and pedalos.

As well as Haven’s own static caravan and luxury lodge accommodation, there are also 177 pitches at Lakeland Holiday Park for tourers and campers, including trailer tents and motorhomes. Free fun passes come with bookings so tourers will be able to enjoy all the amenities that are already available to Haven holidaymakers.
