There Are So Many Reasons For Camping In Normandy

Camping In Normandy will often be the first port of call for campers seeking their first camping expedition across the Channel or more seasoned campers wanting their first stopover before the long journey further south. It’s also a destination well worthy of a holiday in it’s own right.

Perhaps the weather will usually not be dissimilar to that in southern England but apart from that it will offer an authentic French experience for you to sample whether continental camping is for you or not, with plenty of attractions in it’s own right. You’ll also have the great bonus of knowing your destination is just a short drive away, particularly if you’ve opted for one of the Normandy ferry ports such as Ouistreham (sometimes referred to as Caen, the nearest city to the port), Dieppe or Cherbourg. So when the children pipe up with that familiar refrain of “Are we nearly there yet?”, you can genuinely reply “yes” and no sooner have you uttered it your holiday destination will come into view.

For a taste of history, Normandy is the location of the 1944 D Day landings, the legendary Bayeux Tapestry depicting the Norman invasion of England in 1066, William the Conqueror’s dramatic castle at Falaise and of course, the legendary Abbey of Mont-St-Michel, rising out of the sea on a rocky promontory and one of the top tourist attractions in the whole of France, are just a handful of my personal recommendations.

Better still, if beaches are your family’s favourite theme then mile upon mile of sandy beaches will await you, not to mention lovely, picturesque coastal towns such as Fecamp, Honfleur, Deauville, the dramatic clifftop views at Etretat and further inland, lovely historic cities such as Coutances and Sees. You’ll soon discover there is far too much to see to pack into one trip.

Enough of the reasons for going, here are a handful of suggestions for the best of Camping In Normandy.

1) Camping Château Lez-Eaux

A convenient destination to choose if you’ve arrived in France via Cherbourg, Caen or Saint Malo, Chateau de Lez Eaux holds fond memories for me as the first destination chosen for a family touring holiday in the family trailer tent some years ago. As well as pitches with and without electric hook ups for tourers, there are also a selection of mobile home categories, treehouses and pre-erected tents that you can book through leading camping operators such as Eurocamp: Eurocamp.co.uk or French operator Les Castels who give it a 5 star classification.

You can also turn up with your own tent or camper as we did, but you do run the risk of the site being full during peak periods. The site can be contacted directly via Château de Lez Eaux

Amenities on the site include an outdoor and an indoor pool, always handy in view of the unpredictable weather at times, a large playing field, a tennis court, table tennis tables, play areas, a bar, a takeaway food outlet, a grocery, a fishing lake and other essential camping facilities such as washing, cleaning and sanitation units.

2) La Côte de Nacre, St Aubin-sur-Mer

La Côte de Nacre is just yards from the D-Day landing beaches. It also has it’s own fantastic pool complex (see above) which includes waterslides and a retractable roof for the main swimming pool in the event of bad weather. It’s less than 20 minutes drive from the Channel port of Ouistreham so again it is only a short journey once your ferry crossing has been completed. Other facilities include a bar, a grocery shop and a restaurant in part of the bar. There are four table tennis courts, a playground and a small football pitch, a basketball court and pitches for boules.

3) Campsite La Vallee, Houlgate

Long one of the most popular spots for camping in Normandy, Campsite La Vallee is perfectly located for a choice of broad sandy beaches, fascinating history and chic seaside towns. With a toddler pool, a children’s pool and two family pools, this is a camping park to cater for all ages. Add to this four waterslides and you have a waterpark which is built for fun and action. This includes the covered pool which provides an all weather option when needed.

Other facilities include a bar, a restaurant located within the bar, a grocery shop, entertainment options including evening shows, a takeaway, a tennis court, a football pitch, a volleyball court, 3 boules pitches, cycling, pony rides and much more.

Accommodation options here include a range of various mobile homes, safari tents and pitches for tourers.

4) Camping Municipal Du Vieux Chateau, Saint Sauveur Le Vicomte

Camping Municipal Du Vieux Chateau, as the name suggests, is a municipal campsite adjacent to a river and the medieval chateau which overlooks the main road through this small town about 20 miles from Cherbourg. There’s not much here if you’re travelling with a young family but I’ve often found it a convenient spot to camp not far from Cherbourg. The chateau is an interesting building in it’s own right, the campsite has a playground and it is conveniently located for a meal and a drink in the restaurant across the road and another one not too far away which both seem to be highly regarded by visitors and locals alike.

5) Camping de Sainte Mere Eglise

Another very popular small campsite in the small town of the same name, famous for being the first town liberated by US paratroopers on D-Day. It can be found on the N19 road which runs down the eastern side of the Cherbourg Peninsula. The campsite has laundry and sanitary facilities, is across the road from a well known D-Day museum and a playground. There are also sports facilities nearby in the town.
