Camping Les Peneyrals
Camping Les Peneyrals, Family Camping Just A Few Miles From Sarlat
Located just a few miles north of Sarlat, the preserved medieval hub of this part of the Dordogne, Camping Les Peneyrals is perfectly located for exploring the Dordogne as well as being a camping park with plenty of facilities and amenities of it’s own to enjoy.
Having had the pleasure of staying here a few years ago I can confirm it has a lovely spacious feel with static caravans spread around a decently sized fishing lake, a refreshing change from some other locations where they are arranged in rows. Carp and roach populate the fishing lake. Fishing is permitted but the fish have to be returned to the lake after being caught.
The scenic village of Salignac is within easy walking distance of Camping Les Peneyrals. Salignac has some old buildings which give it a traditional Dordogne ambience and a few bars and restaurants as an alternative for dining out away from the campsite.
The campsite itself has it’s own restaurant and bar, including a decking area for eating outside. Evening entertainment is often laid on, particularly live bands, discos and occasionally karaoke.
There is a mini market on site. Larger supermarkets are a few miles away on the main road into Sarlat. Sarlat can get congested to drive into and to park, though if you know the area well there are one or two backstreet routes.
Camping Les Peneyrals has a sizeable pool complex, including four outdoor pools, a toddler pool and two waterslides (one large and one small). One of the pools has a retractable roof which is handy for rare cooler or rainy days. During our stay in late August and early September the temperature was usually in the high twenties or even 30C. As a general rule, summer weather in the Dordogne tends to consist of about 4 hot days, a couple of thundery days and then a return to the hot weather again. There are of course exceptions to that but generally you’d be unlucky not to have more warmer days than cool days.
There is a tennis court, available for a small fee, a football pitch, badminton and basketball courts, a volleyball net, several boules pitches, three different playgrounds and a trampoline. Cycles can also be hired to help you explore the local area, so there are plenty of activities to keep yourself and your family as busy and amused as you want them to be.
The layout of Camping Les Peneyrals definitely helped to make it feel there is plenty of space here, although all the amenities remained within easy reach. With only 250 pitches, this is not a particularly large site.
If you travel on an overnight ferry it’s within a day’s drive of the Channel ports. If you are crossing during the daytime you might want to consider an overnight stop or a second stay to break the journey. Camping Ley Peneyrals is about 400 miles from Ouistreham and St.Malo, and further from Calais or Roscoff.
Activities off site well worth considering are canoeing, as the Dordogne is in such close proximity and just spending time on the riverbanks as there are several sandy beaches along the river. My own favourites are at Gluges, St.Julien and Cenac. Sarlat is great for history, restaurants and shops. Other places well worth a visit include the historic “bastide” of Domme, especially when an evening market is on, La Roque Gageac and the medieval castle at Castelnaud. If you like exploring caves, those near Le Bugue are highly renowned.
If you fancy getting off the beaten track, there is a lovely lake used by the locals at Etang de Tammies not far from Camping Les Peneyrals. It’s signposted from the main road and is a nice spot to relax with sandy beaches, play areas for children and a small kiosk selling refreshments. It’s an ideal spot for a family picnic.
