Camping On The French Riviera
Some Great Locations For Camping On The French Riviera
Camping on the French Riviera or Côte d’Azur conjures up images of glamourous Mediterranean beaches and famous holiday locations such as Cannes, Saint-Tropez and Antibes. There are certainly some magnificent camping holiday parks along the Riviera so here are a handful of the most highly regarded locations.
La Baume (near Fréjus)
Just about every visitor to La Baume seems to report back on what a wonderful time they had and then go on to visit again and again. With no less than seven swimming pools and vibrant night time entertainment in the bar and restaurant, there’s plenty happening at La Baume before you’ve ventured into Fréjus itself to enjoy the beaches and Mediterranean ambience.
Being set on the edge of the Esterel Forest, terraced landscaping gives the holiday park a more intimate feel despite it’s size.
Several camping operators offer holiday bookings at La Baume. In my experience, Al Fresco Holidays usually offer the most competitive deals though of course there can be seasonal variations and deals from other operators that occasionally can match or beat them. It’s also always worth comparing it with any deal available as part of a loyalty deal with any operator you’ve used before.
Camping Les Tournels (near St-Tropez)
Camping Les Tournels is situated on a pine covered hillside between the pictureseque charming hillside village of Ramatuelle and glamourous Saint-Tropez. It overlooks the Bay of Saint-Tropez and a twenty minute walk through vineyards owned by the camping park owner will take you to some golden sandy beaches without the need to drive to them.
The camping park itself has a water pool complex that would do credit to a water park. There are plenty of other amenities too, including a jacuzzi which can be booked in return for a small fee for the duration of your stay, a games room, outdoor table tennis tables, tennis courts and other facilities you’d expect from a 5 Star camping holiday park.
Camping Les Tournels comes under the jurisdiction of the Yelloh top of the range camping holiday parks with whom Canvas Holidays have a close working relationship.
Camping Club Colombier, Frejus
Camping Club Colombier, also known as Camping Domaine du Colombier if booking through leading French camping holiday operator Yelloh Village, is another premier camping location on the French Riviera. Situated close to the stylish Riviera resort of Frejus. Top class facilities at Camping Club Colombier include a huge pool complex, complete with a lazy river, lagoon pool and three waterslides.
Other activities at Camping Club Colombier include tennis, basketball, volleyball, boules, mountain bike hire, an outdoor covered gym and 4 children’s play areas. When you feel ready to relax and enjoy the wonderful views, the bar area has some of the best views you could wish for.
A 5 star camping holiday park, Camping Club Colombier scores 8.8 out of 10 on independent review site Reevoo. With the beaches and promenade at Frejus itself just a couple of miles away, you are sure to feel at the heart of the French Riviera. Slightly further away are other prime Riviera locations such as St.Tropez, Port Grimaud and Saint-Raphael. For a longer scenic drive, try the spectacular Corniche d’Or heading towards Mandelieu and Cannes, which offers some of the most wonderful views anywhere in the world.
Camping Saint-Louis (Autingues, near Cannes)
Just a few miles away from Cannes, one of the premier Riviera destinations, with it’s miles of sandy beaches, promenades, marinas, bars, restaurants, cafes and shops, Camping Saint-Louis is set in a pine clad valley just inland from the Côte d’Azur.
Camping Saint-Louis has a fantastic pool complex with 4 fun zones, at the heart of which is a huge tropical lagoon. There are also three waterslides and a toddler-friendly paddling pool.
There is also evening entertainment in peak season, as well as a bar and a restaurant.
Domaine des Naiades (Port Grimaud, near St Tropez)
Domaine Des Naiades is a new addition to the Eurocamp range of destinations for the 2016 season. As well as having it’s own Olympic-sized swimming pool it is less than half a mile from the beach and has been constructed in large wooded parkland. Port Grimaud is a colourful harbour town where you can enjoy all the flavour of the Riviera.
Be advised that the site is on a hillside so a bit of climbing may be necessary, depending where your accommodation or pitch is. If you are a keen cyclist, this camping holiday park is very close to the main cycle path to Sainte-Maxime to the east and Saint-Tropez to the west. Cycle hire is on offer on-site. Reviews suggest Domaine Des Naiades is a steadily improving, up and coming location.
Practical Information
Getting here by road is not quick, it’s generally at least a 12 hour drive from the Channel ports and the Eurotunnel, so at least one overnight stop to break up the journey is advisable, especially in the peak holiday period of July and August when traffic will be extremely busy and hectic. Another alternative is to fly to one of the airports in the area such as Nice, Toulon, Marseilles or Montpellier and then hiring a car for your holiday or taking the train to Avignon.
If you’re fortunate to be able to travel in June or September you’ll find the weather to be just as good and although still lively, it will generally be a bit less busy and more relaxing to get around. Prices also fall quite a bit outside of the peak periods too, so there is also some great value to be had if you’re able to go at those times instead.
Although these camping holiday parks are the top of our list of where to go Camping On The French Riviera, there are many other excellent alternatives to find from the links we’ve posted with the photographs above. Why not mention your own favourite location so we can feature it in one of our next reviews?
